For all of you that love Spinach as much as I do here’s New Zealand Spinach. I started these from seeds and completely forgot about them as the busy season here at Martin Farms came into full swing. Placed off in the corner of the green house they suffered all varieties of neglect. When I finally got around to planting the trial gardens these poor plants were so sickly sad that I feared I may have lost them. Turns out this was not at all the case.
Only a few days after transplanting these plants came back to life. New growth was rapid and they have a nice healthy spread. I will start harvesting in the next week or so taking leaves from 10 or 12 plants. As I understand it this plant should yield for me most of the summer, WITHOUT BOLTING!
The flavour is similar to spinach and the leaves have a nice succulent crunch. I will be making a strawberry spinach salad with a vinaigrette dressing in the next week or so. I’m hoping this will be yet another go to summer green. Hope to update this post positively as the season progresses.
